The European Commission in January 2001 published in Hamburg the document “European Aeronautics: A Vision for 2020”, through the so-called “Group of Personalities”.

Signed by representatives of the main European Aeronautics Industries' top management, Vision 2020, not only defined the guideline for the development of the European Aeronautic sector, it also contemplated the "Creation of a new entity, the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE), designed to turn the current patchwork into a research network by defining the content of the Strategic Research Agenda and helping to make it a reality”.

ACARE's structure became operational during the second semester of 2001 and produced the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) in 2002. The first biennial update of the SRA (SRA2) was presented at the end of March 2005.

The complex of the aeronautic activities has an important position in social, economic and strategic terms for the Italian system. Thus, the main stakeholders of the Italian aeronautic system constituted ACARE Italia.

In brief, ACARE Italia promotes itself to:

  • facilitate the development of a strategy in the sector aiming to reach a better incisiveness and authority of the R&ST national system in the European and international area;

  • act as a hub for the national objectives and those identified by ACARE Europe;

In order to reach these objectives, ACARE Italia aims to act as a supervisor, guide and coordinator between the actors in the Aeronautic sector and the national institutions.
